Honoring Senator Patrick Leahy: A Lifetime Champion for Humanitarian Mine Action

MAG are delighted to announce the launch of the inaugural Patrick Leahy Mine Action Fund which carries forward the decades-long mission of Senator Patrick Leahy, the third-longest-serving U.S. Senator in history and a lifelong champion for humanitarian mine action.

For more than three decades, Senator Patrick Leahy was a leading political champion for humanitarian mine action, ensuring life-saving assistance reached over 40 countries worldwide. He sponsored the legislation that halted the export of U.S. anti-personnel landmines in 1992 and has been a vocal advocate for a global ban on their use. Through his leadership, millions of lives have been touched, communities have been able to rebuild, and peace has been able to take root after conflict.

Senator Leahy understood that landmines are more than weapons of war—they are weapons against peace. Long after conflicts end, landmines and unexploded bombs cripple agriculture, block access to schools and hospitals, and threaten the lives and livelihoods of innocent people.

"Ridding the world of landmines and other unexploded munitions has been a longtime crusade of mine, and MAG has been an indispensable partner in that effort. We know that by training and equipping local deminers there is no limit to their ability to reclaim land once too dangerous to traverse or cultivate. Our job is to give them the resources they need, and that is the purpose of the Leahy Fund. I want to thank MAG for its leadership and am grateful to all who support this worthy effort.”

About the fund

We are inviting individuals, philanthropists, foundations, and corporations to honor the Senator’s legacy and lifelong commitment to this vital work. The Fund will build a base of support to clear landmines and unexploded ordnance in countries where resources are scarce, where conflict is emerging and ongoing and where communities desperately need support to rebuild and recover.

By contributing, you are making it possible for land to be cleared and deadly item to be removed and destroyed. In turn this means that farmers can reclaim fields, markets can reopen, and children can safely walk to school. Demining also sends a powerful message that peace has arrived and is here to stay.

Proceeds from the Patrick Leahy Mine Action Fund will be managed by MAG US and directed to countries where funding gaps prevent urgent clearance of landmines and unexploded bombs. The Fund ensures that Senator Leahy’s mission—to support communities as they rebuild from the devastating aftermath of war—continues and grows worldwide.

Join us in saving lives by supporting the Patrick Leahy Mine Action Fund.
