Meet the MAG deminers destroying landmines and saving lives

Growing up in Angola, Helena knew the danger of hidden landmines. Inspired by MAG’s work, she joined the team helping to find landmines. Each day, she drops her daughter off with family and heads to the minefield.

"Excavation is the hardest part,” she explains, describing the high-risk process of carefully uncovering explosives. Despite the danger, Helena is proud of her life-saving work. “Clearing mines means safer futures for everyone.”

For Antónia, demining is personal. In 2009, tragedy struck when her 13-year-old cousin, playing near their home, found a hidden explosive and accidentally triggered it. Now a MAG deminer, Antonia works to prevent such tragedies. 

“In every minefield I work, I find mines. The first time, I was shocked. Now it’s routine, but I never forget the danger.” She’s seen minefields cleared and become farms and schools.
